Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that runs through northwest Washington, D.C., holds a number of older stone structures, and this glass negative records one of its springhouses, a small building once used to keep milk, butter and other perishables cool over running water. Springhouses like this one predate the park's creation as a federal reserve, when the land was farms and mills along the creek. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington in the early twentieth century, produced views like this for sale to visitors and publishers. The negative is a glass plate dated roughly between 1918 and 1920, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from age.
