Among the many carriage-era buildings the National Photo Company recorded in Washington, this glass negative shows a stable and carriage house at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue Northwest. The company, active in the capital roughly from the late 1890s into the 1920s, sold views of the city to tourists and residents, and this picture was likely made between about 1900 and 1908. Such outbuildings housed the horses and vehicles that wealthy households relied on before the automobile became common. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in the original coatings, so some detail is softer than it would have been when the plate was new.
