A portrait of the Reverend J.W. Van Kirk, dated July 15, 1921, survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio in Washington, D.C. that photographed local residents and public figures in the early twentieth century. The name and date come from notes the company wrote on the negatives or their sleeves, so they have not been independently verified. Glass plates were the standard medium of the period, and this one shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as the original coatings deteriorate. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
