This glass negative records Most Rev. Archbishop Sekizru Arae, a churchman whose portrait was taken on September 29, 1921. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington, D.C., from the early 1900s into the 1930s, made many portraits of visiting dignitaries and public figures, and this image belongs to that body of work. Glass negatives of this period are fragile, and the streaks and blemishes visible in this one come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings over time.
