A glass negative in the National Photo Company Collection is labeled as a portrait of the Rev. E.J. McGuinness and dated March 20, 1923. The Washington, D.C., studio worked in the early decades of the twentieth century, and its negatives were often captioned on the glass or on the sleeve. That caption information has not been independently verified, so the name and date are best treated as provisional. The Library of Congress received the negative as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes across the surface, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings on the glass.
