Two bishops, Lucien Lee Kinsolving and Joseph Edward Freeman, are named in this portrait dated May 15, 1924, a date recorded on the negative itself. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio active from the early 1900s into the 1920s, made many sittings of clergy, officials and public figures, and its glass plates document church and civic life in the capital during those years. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, so the softness and marks are part of the image's physical history.
