Dated March 14, 1924, this view records a Senate committee convened to investigate the Bureau of Internal Revenue, the federal agency that collected income taxes. The inquiry came during a period of heavy public scrutiny of federal agencies and tax administration in the early 1920s. The image is one of many glass negatives made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and events in the capital. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
