Identified on its negative sleeve as the Rev. Thos. C. Clark, this portrait survives as a 4 by 5 inch glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that documented the city's people, buildings, and events in the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this were the standard medium for studio and press work of the period, and the sharp detail they captured is part of their appeal. The name is recorded as unverified, and the date of about 1923 is inferred from neighboring negatives in the same range. Streaks and other blemishes are visible, the result of gradual deterioration in the original emulsion coatings.
