A Dutch noble title sets this glass negative apart: the sitter is listed as Jonkheer Dr. A.L.D. Van de Graeff, shown with his family and dated December 28, 1922. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, produced portraits and news pictures of officials, visitors and other notable people, and this plate belongs to that body of work. It came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating, a common trait of glass plates of this age.
