Taken on November 9, 1923, this glass negative shows William Gibbs McAdoo with his family, though the title comes from unverified notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. McAdoo had served as Treasury Secretary under his father-in-law, Woodrow Wilson, and by 1923 he was a prominent Democrat who had sought the presidential nomination. The National Photo Company made a large number of portraits of officials and their households in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s. Streaks and blemishes from deteriorating coatings are visible, a common trait of glass plates of this age.
