Dated December 30, 1925 in its record, this glass negative shows President Calvin Coolidge with his family in Washington, a few years into a presidency that began with Warren G. Harding's death in 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, events and daily life in the capital, made many such negatives in the 1920s, and this one came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Coolidge was known for a reserved public manner, so family portraits like this offer a more personal view, though the glass shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating.
