Gerardo Machado, president of Cuba from 1925 to 1933, is the subject of this 1927 glass negative, made at the White House on April 22. Visits by foreign leaders drew press attention in Washington during the 1920s, and the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented officials and public events in the capital, was well placed to record them. Machado's government grew increasingly repressive in its later years, so this ceremonial moment looks different in hindsight. Faint streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the glass coating are visible.
