This glass negative shows Gerardo Machado, Cuba's president-elect, posing with his daughter Elvira in April 1925. Machado had won the 1924 election and would not take office until that May, so the portrait captures him in the interval between victory and inauguration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, made the image, and it came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coatings, so some loss of detail is expected.
