Lt. Commander E.F. McDonald of the U.S. Naval Reserve Force appears on this 1925 glass negative, dated April 8 in the title supplied with the plate, though the record notes that the title has not been independently verified. McDonald was better known as a Chicago businessman who headed the Zenith Radio Corporation, and his naval reserve commission reflected the close ties between early radio and the Navy in the 1920s. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, produced many portraits and news pictures of public figures during this period. The plate shows the streaks and blemishes that appear when the original coatings on glass negatives break down over time.
