Beatrice Beck is the subject here, identified in the title as the daughter of James M. Beck, a Pennsylvania lawyer who served as Solicitor General of the United States in the early 1920s. The picture is a glass negative dated August 18, 1924, made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded official figures, public events and society portraits during the first decades of the twentieth century. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes visible in the record are typical of coatings that have deteriorated with age. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
