The sitter is identified only as Miss Nan Darton, a name the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification has not been independently verified. The glass plate is dated May 19, 1924, from the period when the company, based in Washington, D.C., was producing a large body of portrait and commercial work. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes typical of glass plates whose original coatings have deteriorated over time.
