The picture is a glass negative dated March 9, 1922, and its record names two women, Mrs. Jas. M. Beck and Miss Beatrice Bish, though the company's identifications were never independently checked. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, produced many portraits and street and event views, and its glass plates capture the look of everyday city life in that period. Glass negatives like this one can show streaks and surface flaws from the deterioration of their original coatings, so some marks in the image reflect the plate's age rather than the scene itself. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
