Two women, identified in the title as Mrs. H.H. McClure and Miss Paul, sit for this portrait dated January 18, 1921, though the record notes that the title and date come from unverified information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. The National Photo Company was a commercial studio that made many portraits and views in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates now form a large part of the Library of Congress holdings. Herbert A. French gave this negative to the Library in 1947. The glass shows streaks and other blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is part of what makes it worth studying as an object.
