Mrs. Anna Bogenholm Sloane is the named sitter in this portrait, which survives as a glass negative labeled with a session date of March 31, 1921. That date and title come from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. The company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that made portraits and news pictures in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives later entered the Library of Congress. Worth noticing are the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which catalogers attribute to natural deterioration of the original coating rather than to anything in the scene.
