A glass negative titled "President's barge," dated around 1923, records a vessel identified by its use rather than a name, and the record notes that the title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, documented the city's streets, officials and public occasions, and its plates were often captioned in this way. The record also notes streaks and blemishes caused by the gradual deterioration of the original coatings, which can affect how clearly fine detail reads on the plate.
