This glass negative records a moment from April 15, 1927, when a president received an invitation to spend the summer in Michigan. The president in office that year was Calvin Coolidge. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that supplied news pictures to newspapers, made the 4 by 5 inch plate. Glass negatives like this were the standard working medium of press photography at the time. The surface shows streaks and blemishes from the emulsion's natural deterioration over the decades, which give the image a softened, aged quality worth noticing.
