The negative is labeled "A.D. Summer" and dated April 29, 1922, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified information written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve, so the name and subject are uncertain. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that made tens of thousands of glass negatives of civic life, buildings, and people in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947. Its catalog record also notes streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coating, which is common in glass plates of this age.
