Dr. David Davis appears here on a glass negative, the fragile master from which prints were once made, rather than on a finished print. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., produced many portraits and street scenes in the early twentieth century, and this plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity should be read with that caution. The streaks and blemishes visible on the plate result from deterioration of the original emulsion coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
