The record names the sitter as Edward L. Davis of Tennessee, though that title came from the National Photo Company's notes on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified. The picture belongs to a large group of glass negatives the company made in Washington, D.C., during the 1910s and 1920s, when it photographed public figures and civic events. The date, between 1918 and 1921, is inferred from neighboring negatives rather than from this one. Look closely at the streaks and spots on the surface, which come from the gradual breakdown of the original coatings over time.
