Kenneth McKellar, a Democrat from Tennessee, was a Memphis lawyer who entered the U.S. Senate in 1917 and served there until his death in 1953, so this portrait captures him early in a long career. It comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, buildings and visitors to the capital in the early twentieth century. The record dates it only approximately to around 1921, and the glass negative shows streaks and small blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
