Augustus O. Stanley, a Kentucky politician who served as governor before going on to the U.S. Senate, is the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded lawmakers and public life in the early twentieth century. The negative is dated to about 1921, when Stanley was in the Senate. Glass plates were coated by hand, and many have developed streaks and blemishes as the emulsion aged, so some of that wear is visible here. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
