Atlee Pomerene, a Canton lawyer and Democrat, represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 1911 to 1923, and this portrait dates from about the final years of that term. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, events and street scenes in the early twentieth century, made portraits like this on glass plates for newspapers and publishers. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and its record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
