Peter Norbeck was a South Dakota politician who spent much of his career in the state's legislature and then in the U.S. Senate, which he entered in 1921, the same year this portrait was made. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed officials, visitors and public events in the early twentieth century. Its catalog title records the sitter's name and state, though the date is taken from a related negative rather than from the plate itself. Look for the faint streaks and blemishes that the Library of Congress notes as signs of age in the original coating.
