Few portraits in this collection put a South Dakota politician in front of the camera as directly as this one does, showing Sen. Thomas Sterling. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed members of Congress and other officials in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative around 1921, during the years Sterling served in the Senate. Glass plates like this were common at the time and prized for their sharp detail, though the coating has aged, leaving streaks and blemishes that show on the negative.
