A portrait of Westmoreland Davis, who served as governor of Virginia from 1918 to 1922, dated September 6, 1921, this image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented public figures and events in the early twentieth century. The picture survives as a small glass negative, a format that captured fine detail but was fragile over time. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coatings, which are visible traces of the negative's age. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
