This National Photo Company negative records a meeting between a Wainwright and Dwight F. Davis, dated March 6, 1923. Davis is best known as the donor of the Davis Cup, the international men's tennis trophy he helped establish in 1900 while a student at Harvard. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm, produced news and portrait images on glass plates in the early twentieth century, so the picture reflects the capital's official and social life of the period. The negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass emulsions, which are visible in the image's surface.
