Dwight F. Davis, the tennis champion who founded the Davis Cup in 1900, is the subject of this 1923 portrait, which dates the negative to March 6 of that year. Davis later served as Secretary of War under President Calvin Coolidge and as Governor-General of the Philippines, so the sitting falls in the years before his public career reached its height. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio known for portraits and news pictures, made the negative on glass, a format that was common for studio work of the period. Viewers may notice streaks and small blemishes, which come from the gradual breakdown of the original coating on the glass.
