The name attached to this glass negative is Dwight F. Davis, best remembered today as the donor of the Davis Cup, the international tennis trophy he gave in 1900. By the early 1920s he was active in Washington public life, and he later served as Secretary of War under Calvin Coolidge. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and events in the capital during these years. The plate was given to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its streaks and blemishes come from deterioration in the original coating, a reminder of how fragile these early negatives are.
