The title on this glass negative, "Jeff Davis," with a date of August 30, 1924, is a label the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the record notes it has not been verified, so the identity of the subject remains uncertain. The Washington, D.C., firm photographed city life, public figures and events during the 1910s and 1920s, and its negatives later came to the Library of Congress as a collection. This example was a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The streaks and blemishes visible across the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
