The name Ben G. Davis, written on this glass negative, is what distinguishes it from the many street and portrait views in the National Photo Company's output. The title and April 6, 1923 date came from the company's own notations on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. The firm worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, recording the city's streets, institutions and residents on large glass plates. The collection reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Streaks and other blemishes on the surface likely reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
