This glass negative pairs a catcher, Ben April, with a player identified as Chas. Barker, listed as "Tech.," in 1923. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that operated in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of athletes and students, and its images often captured players in uniform for newspapers and team programs. The record's date and names come from information written on the negative sleeve and have not been independently verified. Because the plate is glass, faint streaks and blemishes from the aging of its original coating are visible in places, which is typical of collections of this age.
