The name on this negative, Chas. McKenley, was written by the National Photo Company, but the record marks it as unverified, so the sitter's identity is still open. The company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing portraits and views of people and events in the city. Glass negatives like this one carried a light-sensitive coating that can flake or streak as it ages, which accounts for the blemishes on the surface. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947.
