Three men are named together in this glass negative: Gen. Charles P. Summerall, Secretary of War Dwight Davis, and a general listed as "Gen. Jus. L. Hines." The record dates the sitting to November 20, 1926, only days before Summerall became Army Chief of Staff, which gave the meeting a timely weight. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded government officials and public occasions in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of its original coating.
