Here the First Lady, Grace Coolidge, is captured in a scene the National Photo Company titled as a May Day event dated April 30, 1927, though that label comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve. Grace Coolidge served as first lady from 1923 to 1929, while her husband, Calvin Coolidge, was president. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, recorded civic and political life in the capital. This glass negative, given to the collection in 1947, shows the streaks and blemishes that develop as the original coatings deteriorate over time.
