Naval aviator Richard E. Byrd is pictured with Coolidge, most likely President Calvin Coolidge, and Machinist Bennett, probably Floyd Bennett, the Navy machinist who had flown with Byrd on the 1926 North Pole flight. In early 1927 Byrd was a prominent figure in naval aviation, and his attention was turning toward long-distance flight across the Atlantic. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company's collection of Washington-era pictures and shows the streaks and blemishes that often mark aging emulsion on glass plates.
