Calvin Coolidge presents a Congressional medal to Commander Richard E. Byrd, with a flag associated with Floyd Bennett, the machinist and aviator who flew with Byrd. The honor recognized the 1926 flight over the North Pole, which made Byrd and Bennett widely known in the United States. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., during these years and recorded many official ceremonies, so the picture offers a useful view of how the government honored aviation pioneers in the late 1920s. The glass negative shows the streaks and surface blemishes typical of aging coatings on glass plates from this period.
