The title on this glass negative links the flag to a Philadelphia troop of light horse that escorted George Washington in 1775, though the National Photo Company's data for it is unverified. Washington did leave Philadelphia in June 1775 to take command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, and the city's First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry is the best-known mounted unit that accompanied him. The negative itself dates from roughly 1909 to 1920, and it shows streaks and other blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating.
