This glass negative is titled "Gen'l Villa & Fierrio," which the sleeve links to Gen. Francisco "Pancho" Villa and his officer Rodolfo Fierro, though the record calls the title unverified. Villa led one of the largest armies of the Mexican Revolution, and Fierro was among his most feared commanders, so the pairing points to the northern Mexico campaigns of the revolutionary years. The date range of 1908 to 1919 covers the revolution's rise and peak, when American photographers and picture agencies such as the National Photo Company documented its military leaders. The streaks and surface blemishes on the plate are signs of the coating's natural deterioration over time.
