The label on the negative sleeve identifies the subject as Pancho Villa, though the National Photo Company's title is unverified, so the attribution is worth weighing with that in mind. Villa led revolutionary forces across northern Mexico during the Mexican Revolution, and his name became familiar to American readers after 1916, when he raided Columbus, New Mexico. The plate comes from the National Photo Company collection, a commercial studio whose glass negatives document many people and scenes of the early twentieth century. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass stem from natural deterioration of its original coatings, not from the subject itself.
