Colonel Augusto Villa, listed in the title as middle attaché of the Italian Embassy, sat for this portrait on August 25, 1925, according to the date recorded with the negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active from the 1910s into the 1930s, made many portraits of diplomats, officials, and visitors to the capital, and sittings like this one capture the embassy staff of the period. The streaks and blemishes on the glass are natural deterioration of the original coatings, and they are worth noticing as a reminder of the negative's age.
