This glass negative records a group of Italian men, identified on a paper note as S.C. Porsarelli, Senatorio Marconi, Prince Undina, Saverio Nitti, Signor Curfilli and Signor Arlotta, though the record does not confirm their roles. Italy sent wartime commissions to the United States between 1917 and 1918 to arrange loans, munitions and supplies, and Nitti, a leading Italian statesman, later became prime minister. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., often documented official visits like this one, and streaks on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coating.
