Plymouth, on England's southwest coast, was a major Royal Navy port, and this glass negative is titled for a submarine flotilla based there in the years before the First World War. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. commercial agency, produced views like this for a broad public audience in the early twentieth century. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified, and the date range is inferred from neighboring negatives. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating.
