The National Photo Company titled this glass negative "A Mexican Peon soldier," but that label is unverified and reflects the language of its era more than a confirmed identity for the sitter. The negative dates from sometime between 1908 and 1919, a span that covers the Mexican Revolution, when armed factions contested the country and images of soldiers circulated widely. The company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that sold views and postcards, so pictures like this one often reached audiences far from where they were taken. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
