Recorded as the Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C., this glass negative shows a site tied to one of the capital's longest-running institutions for veterans. The National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers established a branch on grounds north of downtown, and President Abraham Lincoln kept a summer cottage on the property. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which Herbert A. French gave to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
