Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this view, one of many church and street scenes the National Photo Company made of the capital in the decade or so after 1909. The company's photographers worked the city steadily during those years, and their images were widely reproduced as postcards and lantern slides, so this negative shows a neighborhood parish much as a passerby of the period might have seen it. The glass plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. It shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, a reminder of how much these early negatives depend on careful preservation.
